Year 8 Step Back In Time Thanks To The Naseby Battlefield Project
Roundheads and Cavaliers descended on Princethorpe on Tuesday 6 October to take Year 8 pupils back to 1645 in a history workshop delivered by the Naseby Battlefield Project.
Their expert re-enactors helped bring the English Civil War vividly to life, in three workshops, sharing the events leading up to the decisive Battle of Naseby and the key figures whose decisions shaped the fate of King Charles I and the course of British history. Through presentations and hands-on activities, pupils gained a deeper understanding of the conflict and its lasting impact.
The interactive workshop gave pupils the opportunity to handle replica weapons and discover the vital roles played by pike men, musketeers and drummers on the battlefield. One pupil dressed in Civil War armour, while others practised military manoeuvres with pikes and learnt the importance of battlefield drumming in coordinating troops.
Pupils also discovered more about Princethorpe's connections to the Civil War, as well as nearby historical locations including Daventry, where King Charles I's troops were based before the Battle of Naseby, and Edge Hill, the site of the first major English Civil War battle.
Throughout the day, Year 8 approached the activities with enthusiasm and a real willingness to engage with the past. By stepping into the shoes of soldiers and their commanders, they developed a better understanding of the challenges and battle strategies of this important period in British history.
A huge thank you to the Naseby Battlefield Project team for delivering such an informative, engaging and memorable day of learning. They really brought the Civil War alive.
