Battlefields Trip Brought Classroom Learning To Life

The group visited the most significant sites of the Ypres Salient, from the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 and Tyne Cot Cemetery to Hill 60, Sanctuary Wood and the In Flanders Fields Museum. Pupils gained a much deeper appreciation of the scale, sacrifice and human cost of the First World War.

A particular highlight of the trip was attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, and we were immensely proud of our pupils, who represented Princethorpe College with maturity, respect and dignity. It was a privilege for members of our group to lay a wreath during the ceremony, a poignant moment that will remain with everyone who attended. Their impeccable behaviour throughout reflected great credit on themselves, their families and the College.

Special thanks go to Mr Scopes for his outstanding teaching and expert guidance throughout the visit. His knowledge of the Ypres Salient, together with the historical context he provided before and during each visit, enabled pupils to make meaningful connections between the places they visited and the stories of those who fought there. His passion for First World War history brought the battlefields to life and made the experience both engaging and memorable.

The trip was not only an excellent educational opportunity but also one that encouraged reflection, empathy and remembrance. It was a fitting tribute to those who served and a valuable experience that will stay with our pupils for years to come.
