College Athletes Enjoy An Excellent Start To The 2026 Athletics Season

02 Jun

Before half-term, Princethorpe enjoyed an excellent start to the athletics season, first at the Warwickshire Combined Events, then the English Schools’ Cup and finally at the Independent Schools’ Association’s Midlands Region Athletics.

The Warwickshire Schools Combined Events took place at The Pingles Stadium, in Nuneaton, on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 May. Schools from across the county sent their best athletes to the two-day event and standards were high as competitors aimed to accrue as many points as possible across the track and field events.

Princethorpe entered pupils from Years 7 to 10 with some great success. Year 10, Dami Ajagunna was the winner of the Inter Girls’ competition while, Year 7, Wesley Hague took first place in the Minor Boys. Year 10, Finley Jones came second in the Inter Boys and, Year 8, Lucile Bell-Barth came third in the Junior Girls. Overall, the Inter Girls placed second as a team.

Next was the first round of the English Schools’ Cup. That took place on Tuesday 12 May at the Rugby Athletics Track. Another excellent afternoon of competition saw the Junior Girls and Inter Girls qualify for the Midlands A final. While the Junior Boys qualified for the Midlands B final.

Finally, the ISA Midlands Track and Field Athletics took place at the Saffron Lane Athletics Track in Leicester on Friday 22 May. Princethorpe’s athletes joined competitors from independent schools across the Midlands region all aiming to qualify for the National Finals on Monday 15 June.

In a dominant display, Princethorpe saw 19 athletes qualify for the National Championship, an incredible result. They included:

  • Year 10 pupils, Dami - High Jump, Isla - Javelin, Dax - Triple Jump, Finley - 800m, Mimi  - 300m, Marisa - Discus and Shot and Oscar - Discus
  • Year 9 pupils, Ava - Discus, Sophie - Shot, Jess - 800m and Rufus - Javelin

Foundation Director of Sport, Lee Cassell, was delighted, commenting, “A huge well done to all of our athletes. They have responded so well to the competition they faced.”

The best of luck to all our pupils competing in the next rounds of the competitions over the next few weeks.
