Two Princethorpe pupils have qualified for the ISA Public Speaking national finals after recorded submissions of them delivering a speech in front of an audience were entered into the competition by Head of English, Helen Pascoe-Williams.
The prestigious competition offers pupils attending independent schools the opportunity to display their presentation and oratory skills.
Year 7, Oscar, and Year 8, Ayesha, spoke on their chosen topics of ‘The Future Of Technology’ and ‘Is Academic Success A Product Of Nature Or Nurture?’.
The pupils had researched and written their speeches in after-school English Society, honing their arguments and practising their delivery. Their speeches were judged on three skill sets; reasoning and evidence, expression and delivery, and organisation and prioritisation. Feedback from the judges praised their engaging take on the topic and the pupils’ secure and confident delivery.
Mrs Pascoe-Williams, said, “Public speaking improves communication skills and builds self-confidence. It develops the ability to articulate thoughts and present ideas persuasively. It’s an invaluable skill that enhances pupils’ learning and is incredibly useful for later life.”
These two pupils now go forward to the national finals that take place on Wednesday 25 March, at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University.
We offer our congratulations to Oscar and Ayesha and wish them the very best of luck in the finals.
