Princethorpe Historic Buildings Appeal

The Princethorpe Historic Buildings Appeal aims to raise £3 million for the restoration of the College's roundhouse and its Pugin Chapel, two historic and nationally important buildings.

The first project - restoration of the Roundhouse

The Roundhouse is a burial cloister with a slate roofed perimeter and it once had a grassed central open space with an obelisk. Built between 1835 and 1842, its outer walls are brick with a neo Norman doorway and it originally had two small windows.

Currently the roof is covered with tarpaulin to keep the building water-tight. The slated roof will be restored and the central area, which would originally have been open, will be glazed.

The intention once restored is to turn the Roundhouse into a cloistered gallery and venue to promote Princethorpe's art and music

The Roundhouse project will cost in the region of £500,000.

The second project - restoration of the Chapel

The Chapel is at the heart of the College and in constant use. An important late Victorian church designed and built by Peter Paul Pugin, son of the famous Augustus Welby Pugin between 1897 and 1901, there is now an urgent need to re-point the brickwork of the tower and to eradicate water penetration which is showing increasingly inside the building.

Restoration of the Chapel will be a medium term project costing a further £2.5 million phased over a period of five years. Attention will first be given to the water penetration but ultimately to the refurbishment of the entire building.
