English

We have a well established English Literature course which is taught to groups of up to fifteen students by two teachers per group.
At AS-level students study a Shakespeare play, an additional drama text, a modern novel and a poetry text. Most students continue with the subject at A2 level, which involves further study of both poetry and drama, together with a coursework component involving the comparison of two texts, usually novels, and a synoptic paper which is currently based on the literature of the First World War.

In addition to this popular course, we are now launching a combined English Language and Literature course. This course has a literature element, but also gives students the opportunity to continue their language study.

They have opportunities to develop their writing skills in both fiction and non-fiction contexts any they are given the methodology which enables them to analyse a wide spectrum of different types of language from a variety of angles, developing in the process an understanding of how language changes over time. There has been considerable interest among the students in this course.

Extra Curricular

The subject is complemented at all levels by stimulating extra-curricular activities. We oversee the debates which are organised by the sixth form. We also offer students opportunities to participate in competitions, including our own annual poetry competition.
